Class of 2017 Updated Football Prospect Rankings

Here at ITHMA we have reviewed 70 top players from the class of 2017. As the season winds down (and as more offers come in) we take another look back and rank the top 70 high school football prospects. Any updates from previous 2017 lists are in bold and italic writing.

  1. AJ Dillon – Lawrence Academy – Committed to Boston College – Dillon, simply put, is a man among boys. As a junior won ISL MVP and received several high FBS offers from teams such as Notre Dame and Mississippi State. Dillon plays running back and linebacker for LA and he wants to play RB at the next level but could also translate as a staunch linebacker for the Maize and Blue. Update: Taking an official visit to Boston College as a place where he can compete for time at the running back position. 12/14/16 Dillon de-committed from Michigan and committed to Boston College.
  2. Alex Marshall – Andover HS, Brooks, Bridgton Academy – Committed to Florida State University – Once a blue chip lacrosse prospect committed to UNC, Marshall ultimately turned towards football and the tight end position. Before committing to FSU he had over 25 offers to play football including major programs such as Ohio State and Alabama. Marshall has a 6′ 7″ frame with room to add bulk and excel at Florida State.
  3. Blake Gallagher -St. Sebastians – Committed to Northwestern– Gallagher is another High School RB/LB who is going to translate to LB at the next level. Gallagher had multiple power 5 offers and will look to compete for playing time at Northwestern. Gallagher is also a great athlete and one of the top baseball prospects in the state but looks as though he will only focus on football.
  4. Dallas Hobbs – Cedar Rapids (IA) / Deerfield Academy – DE / TE – Standing 6’5″ and 240 pounds Hobbs is an athletic defensive end with both size and speed. Hobbs sets the edge well and can track down running backs or put pressure on the quarterback with excellent hand and arm technique. Hobbs has offers from Army, U Conn, Toledo, Dartmouth, Brown, Fordham, Holy Cross and Lafayette while also receiving interest from Columbia, Pitt and UNH. Committed to U Conn. Committed to Washington State.
  5. Coby Tippet – Xaverian (2016) Chesire Academy – Uncommitted -Tippet is a football player and a game changer. His father is in the NFL Hall of Fame and although he did not get his father’s size he got his football ability. Tippet was everything at Xaverian last year and was easily one of the best players in the state. Tippet has no formal offers but he will play big time football. Tippet visited Alabama, Georgia and Auburn over the summer and is also close to Iowa as it is his father’s alma-mater. Tippet is a player that will contribute at the next level with the only question being where he will land. Update: Visited Penn St. University and being recruited by Boston College, Rutgers, Maine, Stony Brook, University of Albany, Delaware and Towson. Committed to Towson.
  6. John Dean – Xaverian(2016), Choate – Committed to Yale – Dean started as a sophomore LB on a Xaverian defense loaded with players like Joe Gaziano and played ahead of current Houston Cougar Daundre Holmes-Wilfork. Dean was then hurt in his sophomore campaign and also missed most of his junior year with an injury before returning as a senior to be one of the top RB/LB players in the state. If it was not for injury, Dean would be on his way to a power 5 school but instead Yale stepped in and offered him. Do not be surprised if Dean is an all Ivy LB in the years to come.
  7. Ifeatu Melifonwu – Grafton HS – Committed to Syracuse University – Melifonwu is a great athlete that has three FBS offers from BC, UCONN, and Syracuse. His brother is currently a senior at U Conn and he will follow in his brother’s footsteps to play FBS football. Ifeatu will most likely be a DB at the next level. Offered by Navy. Visited Michigan.
  8. Noah Gray – Leominster HS – Committed to Duke University – Gray played QB for Leominster for the bulk of his high school career being a superior athlete. At the next level he will play TE or WR at Duke and could be a very good pass catcher for years to come as shown in his recent game versus Algonquin with four touchdown receptions. With the transition to a pass catcher at Duke, Gray will only improve and could become a force in the ACC.
  9. Cal Flanders – Xaverian – Committed to Brown University – Flanders is a strong DE with a quick burst and will excel in the Ivy League. Flanders will either play DE or as an OLB at Brown. Offered as a preferred walk-on at Michigan.
  10. AJ Ryan – Xaverian – Uncommitted – The second Xaverian Brown commit will play linebacker and continue to play his physical style. For Xaverian he also plays TE but lacks traditional size to play TE at the Division 1 level and will either focus on defense or play an H-Back type position. Update: Recently de-committed from Brown University but still getting interest from Dartmouth and Princeton. Offered by Colgate. Committed to Yale.
  11. Ryan Reagan – Duxbury HS – Committed to Harvard University – Reagan is a true game changer and will look to continue to be a vertical threat at Harvard. He may have gone to a bigger FBS power 5 school if he had stayed healthy. Either way Reagan is a tremendous FBS talent and Harvard is truly gaining a diamond in the rough.
  12. EJ Perry – Andover HS – Committed to Boston College – The state’s best quarterback prospect and another great athlete. Perry is also a star basketball player and baseball player and he had an offer to play baseball at Boston College but turned it down. Perry looks to rewrite the state record books this season and then enroll early at BC to compete for the starting job next year.
  13. Cory Ryder – Nantucket HS – Committed to Holy Cross – Arguably the best lineman in the Bay State, Ryder has a slew of FCS offers along with interest from FBS programs. Ryder is a very good student and had several offers from Ivy schools and even a walk-on offer from Notre Dame. Since his commitment he has visited UMASS and BC and could jump to an FBS school if a scholarship offer is extended. Committed to William and Mary.
  14. Sasha Hoban – Newton South HS – Committed to Yale – Hoban is a big TE who held offers from BC, Fordham, and also many Ivy offers. Hoban was first offered by BC in the spring months before his former QB Austin Burton received an offer and one would think if Burton had stayed committed Hoban would have followed. With Burton’s de-commitment from BC Hoban remains a question mark as to where he will end up.
  15. Allan Rappleyea – Milton Academy – Committed to Wake Forest– Rappleyea is a large OL who has used his size to compete in the ISL. Rappleyea will have to put on muscle and down the road will look to contribute in a power 5 conference for the Deacons.
  16. Austin Burton – BC High,Newton South,West Orange HS (FLA) -Committed to UCLA– Burton was a prolific passer while at Newton South and was closing in on a Troy Flutie’s state passing touchdown record. Burton then transferred to West Orange to see if he could follow in the footsteps of Auburn commit Woody Barrett. Burton had proved at Newton South that with good talent in WR Anthony Denitto (a Harvard track athlete) and TE Sasha Hoban (several offers to play college football) he could put up big numbers. When he got to West Orange multiple receivers were expelled and quit the team leaving Burton shorthanded this season. Burton is the only UCLA QB commit for 2017 class so this will put him in a great position to replace current UCLA QB Josh Rosen after next season.
  17. Jack McGowan – Catholic Memorial – Committed to Harvard University – McGowan could be the most underrated prospect in the 2017 class. McGowan has a Luke Kuechly type sense of the field and is always near the ball. Also a good athlete a big part of the knights offense. McGowan will be someone to keep an eye on in the upcoming years in the Ivy league.
  18. Jordan McAfee – Everett HS – Committed to UCONN – McAfee has had a roller coaster high school career starting as a sophomore QB at a perrenial state power where he fell just short of a state title. McAfee then missed most of his junior campaign due to illness but picked up a UCONN offer after receiving a BC offer as a sophomore. McAfee has all the tools to be a FBS QB and with his size McAfee will have a world of opportunity at UCONN.
  19. Alec Lindstrom – Shepard Hill- Committed to Boston College– Lindstrom will follow in his brother’s footsteps and enroll at BC. Lindstrom will continue to bulk up and look for playing time at BC along with his brother Chris who has started early in his Eagle career.
  20. Michael Silva – Milton Academy – Harvard University – Silva has been playing at the ISL varsity level since his freshman year. He will most likely contribute as a scat back and on special teams at Harvard. Silva is a dynamic playmaker that is good in space and Harvard will be sure to take advantage of that skill.
  21. Hunter Long – Exeter, Deerfield Academy – Boston College– Long who is prepping at Deerfield, will look to compete for playing time right away at BC. Long has a big body for a pass catching TE and BC is a program that wants to use their TEs in their offensive system.
  22. Kingsley Ejiogu-Dike – Brockton High School – MLB – A solid run stopper and a physical presence at 6’2″ and 225 pounds, Ejiogu-Dike has received interest from several Ivy League schools as well as U Mass. Look for him to play football at the next level. Committed to Brown University.
  23. Patrick Flynn – Hanover High School – G / DT – An aggressive and athletic guard and a disruptive defensive tackle, Flynn recently committed to the University of New Hampshire. At 6’4″ and 275 pounds Flynn is an active pulling guard on run plays and this should translate well at the next level.
  24. Bobby Maimaron – Duxbury HS – Williams – QB Maimaron received a FBS offer from App State after his junior season and since then has done nothing short of impressive with his on the field play. Also a very talented lacrosse player look for Maimaron to play at an Ivy or NESCAC school. Update: Maimaron will play football and lacrosse at Williams next year.
  25. Scott Murphy – Billerica HS – Uncommitted – Murphy started playing football as a junior and broke out last season recording 14.5 sacks. Murphy has received offers from Bryant, Marist, Bucknell and with his stellar play look for Murphy to pick up bigger FCS offers or take a prep year and look to play FBS football. Either way, Murphy is a tremendously talented prospect as a DE/OLB. Also a top baseball prospect. Committed to Army.
  26. Brian Espanet – Millis HS – WR / CB – Espanet stands tall at 6’4″ and 185 pounds and is a solid WR that runs good routes and has good hands. Also playing on defense he is a good cornerback who uses his size and quickness to defend receivers. Committed to University of Maine and with the ability to add size to his frame he should be a very productive FCS receiver. Update: Espanet de-committed from Maine and committed to the University of New Hampshire.
  27. Riley Burns – Milford High School – G / DT – Another University of New Hampshire commit, Burns stands 6’4″ and 290 pounds and helps clear the way for Yale commit RB / LB Blake Hill. Burns also had offers from Albany, Bryant, Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart.
  28. Nathaniel Miller – Belmont Hill – T / DT – A physically dominant tackle at 6’5″ and 285 pounds Miller is committed to U Penn and had drawn interest from Harvard and Boston College.
  29. Kevin Mensah – Holy Name, Shepard Hill HS – Uncommitted – Mensah is one of the biggest names in the state but is having a rocky senior season. The MIAA had suspended Mensah for transferring schools and this forced Mensah to go to court so he could play for Shepard Hill. Mensah now has a limited opportunity to impress coaches for a Division 1 offer. Mensah is a great talent and unfortunately the MIAA caused him to have a rocky beginning to his senior year. Mensah has one FCS offer from Bryant but give him some time on the field behind a good O-line and the offers could be rolling in by the end of the season. Look for Mensah to pick up several FCS offers and for U MICH, UConn or BC to offer Mensah as they have both shown interest. Offered as a preferred walk-on at Michigan.
  30. Alex Claudio – Putnam High School / Wilbraham and Monson Academy – DB – A playmaker who stands 6’0″ and 180 pounds Claudio was all NEPSAC first team as a junior. Also a wrestler, he currently holds offers from Bryant and Central Connecticut with interest from other schools including Holy Cross. Update: Claudio holds offers from Bryant, Sacred Heart, Central Connecticut and Georgetown with strong interest from University of Albany.
  31. Jake Byczco – Lawrence Academy – Committed to UCONN – Another TE from a talented Bay State class, Byczco had offers from FCS schools but chose to take his prowess to the FBS level. 1/17/17 De-committed from UConn. Offered by UMass. Committed to UMass.
  32. Cole McCubrey – West Boylston HS – Committed to UMASS – McCubrey will be a LB at the next level despite being one of the state’s most productive RBs. The same burst and quickness will help him diagnose plays as he heads to the next level.
  33. Griffin Burke – Barnstable HS / Cheshire Academy – DE / TE – Burke re-classed from the 2016 class at Barnstable HS and joined the 2017 class at Cheshire Academy. A good athlete who also plays baseball, Burke played QB at Barnstable but his size at 6’4″ and 245 pounds led to him playing very effectively at the defensive end position at Cheshire. Burke holds an offer from Princeton. Update: Committed to Harvard.
  34. Dan Gemmell – Andover HS – Committed to Brown University – Gemmell is an explosive WR with good size to be a productive player at the FCS level. His speed and size will allow him to play quickly at Brown.
  35. Jake Guidone – Xaverian – Committed to Dartmouth – One of the state’s unheralded OL prospects with a solid playing style. Often gets over looked playing on a talented Xaverian team but will compete for playing time at Dartmouth over the next couple of years.
  36. Adam Buchanan – BB&N – Committed to Princeton – TE Buchanan seemed to have committed to Holy Cross via a social media post but it has since been deleted. He holds offers from several Patriot league schools and will be a good get for an FCS team. At 6 foot 4 he could be a pass catching tight end at the FCS level.
  37. Duval Paul – Everett HS – DT / DE – A physical presence on defense Paul stands 6’2″ and 245 pounds while running a sub five forty yard dash. Uses his speed and strength to dominate in the trenches and recently picked up an offer from Lafayette and should receive more interest from FCS or possibly FBS after a strong senior year and a looming test against Xaverian’s recruited D1 linemen in the Division 1 Super Bowl. Update: Has received offers from Lafayette, Sacred Heart and the University of Albany. Committed to Georgetown.
  38. Mehki Henderson – Xaverian – Uncommitted – Henderson is a four year starter at Xaverian and has been a part of two consecutive state championships playing as a lockdown corner. He holds three FCS offers from CCSU, Sacred Heart and Bryant. It will be interesting to see where Henderson ends up and would not be surprised if a FBS team picks him up as a great football player who may lack ideal size or speed.
  39. Blake Hill – Milford HS – Yale University – Another RB/LB who will most likely translate to a LB at the next level. Hill is a physical football player who has been one of the best players in the state over the past season. He held multiple Ivy offers before choosing Yale.
  40. Mark Mulvaney – Holliston HS – Uncommitted- Mulvaney is one of the state’s best offensive lineman. A strong and sturdy athlete, Mulvaney has been offered by Columbia. Mulvaney will play at the next level and is similar to former Marshfield player Shane Leonard who is currently a BC offensive lineman.
  41. Austin Pyne – Cushing, Lawrence Academy – Uncommitted- Pyne is an interesting case as his recruitment appeared to be on the rise when he had said he was offered by Auburn University last year. He has since been offered by Villanova and Sacred Heart. If the offer from Auburn is still on the table one would expect Pyne to take it but only the future will tell. 1/17/17 Offered by Lafayette. Committed to Lafayette.
  42. James LoChirco – Mystic Valley HS – Uncommitted – LoChirco received the first division one offer in his school’s history as a linebacker. LoChirco is a linebacker that diagnoses and reacts to plays well and Bryant is definitely an option for LoChirco, while he has also received interest from UNH, Fordham and CCSU as well as others. LoChirco could be a steal at the right school as he is a very sound football player.
  43. Sherron Dailey-Harris – Melrose HS / Lawrence Academy – CB / WR – A good athlete who also plays basketball, Daley-Harris stands 6’0″ and 180 pounds. A playmaker on both sides of the ball but will probably be looked at on the defensive side of the ball as a result of his 4.6 forty speed. Has received an offer from UNH and has had interest from FCS schools such as Villanova. Committed to UNH.
  44. Devin DeMeritt– Duxbury HS – RB/WR- DeMeritt is an interesting case. He missed his junior season and now in his senior campaign is clearly one of the top offensive weapons in the state. DeMeritt runs well but he really excels in the receiving game where he has been huge considering the impact of Duxbury having lost Harvard commit WR Ryan Reagan to an injury. With a 40 time in the mid 4.5 range and a 6’1” frame, DeMeritt’s production should be something that draws interest from local colleges.
  45. Greg Wood – Braintree HS – Committed to Bryant – Wood is a talented lineman and powerful player who excels on both sides of the ball. If Wood had more size he would likely be a FBS player but Bryant will get a player with a good motor.
  46. Declan Burt – Saint John’s Prep – Uncommitted – Has offers from Columbia and Bryant. Another athletic TE/DE combination, has good blood lines with his brother a TE at BC. It is unsure if he will be a pass catcher or disruptive defensive player at the next level. 1/14/17 Committed to Bryant.
  47. Sharif Harris-Legree – Cardinal Hayes HS (NY) / Deerfield Academy – QB- Harris-Legree is lanky at 6’3″ and only 188 pounds but is a solid pocket passer that uses his feet well. Avoids pocket pressure well and an accurate passer that can put the ball on his receivers hands. Harris-Legree has an offer from Grambling University and has had interest from U Conn, Rutgers and Boston College.
  48. Kevin Crabtree – Milton Academy – C / LS – Crabtree is good size for a center as he goes 6’3″ and 250 pounds and helps clear the way for the very productive MA running game. Also a very talented long snapper, Crabtree had picked up an offer from U Mass before committing to Villanova where he should contribute immediately on special teams.
  49. Connor Degenhardt – Westford Academy – Holy Cross – Degenhardt certainly has all of the tools to be the best QB in the class as he has a good frame (that will need bulking up) and also a great arm. Look for Degenhardt as a project that you will hear about in a few years down the road at Holy Cross.
  50. Kingsley Umemba – BB&N –Committed to Georgetown – Recently picked up an offer from Georgetown. An athletic DE that will continue to draw attention as the season goes on.
  51. Sam Laurent – Xaverian – Uncommitted – Laurent has come late to the scene but is a presence at 6’3” WR/DB and reportedly runs a sub 4.5 forty with a 33” vertical. Laurent plays for Xaverian and if he does well down the stretch to the playoffs he could receive a late offer. If not, Laurent could prep or choose to play at a level less than FBS/FCS. Update: Laurent received an offer from Holy Cross (he will visit on December 9th) and has interest from Brown, Columbia, U Penn, Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut. Recently offered by Colgate and U Conn.
  52. Anthony Dandini – Leominster HS- Uncommitted – Dandini picked up his first offer from Bryant but has not yet committed. He plays well as an aggressive OLB/FB. At the college level he will most likely play OLB on defense but with the infusion of H-back’s into college offenses he could also play on the offensive side of the ball.
  53. Pete Kendall – Nobles and Greenough HS – Committed to U PENN -Kendall had several FCS offers along with an FBS offer from UMASS. Kendall has bloodlines as his father played in the NFL and also size at 6’6″. Look for him to be a good blocking TE first and also contribute in the passing game.
  54. Devon Piccinin – Xaverian – Committed to Bentley – A powerful runner in between the tackles. Although Piccinin lacks ideal size to play at the division one level, he could contribute right away at Bentley like former Hawk Peter Thorbahn.
  55. Broghean McGovern – Haverhill HS – Uncommittted – McGovern is a 6′ 5″ QB and picked up an offer from Bryant last winter. McGovern is in a run heavy offense with limited plays to prove he is worthy of a scholarship offer. Colleges love size especially at the QB position and McGovern will definitely get a flyer taken on him at the FCS level.
  56. Coreese Everett – Springfield Central HS -Uncommitted – A versatile athlete who is dynamic in open space and reportedly runs a 4.4 forty. Everett and fellow teammate Walker are a dynamic duo and should expect Everett to get FCS looks after his season as he has picked up an offer from Maine.
  57. Diogo DeSousa – Mansfield HS – K / P – At 5’11” and 180 pounds DeSousa has a strong leg in all aspects of the kicking game. Excels at kickoffs by reaching the end zone and by not having kicks returned. Solid punter and place kicker he has drawn interest from Division 1 colleges. Committed to URI.
  58. Colin Lama – Xaverian – Uncommitted – A key player in the Hawk’s defense for the past two seasons, Lama is a physical beast and plays like a man among boys. He lacks ideal size but is a smart player and could play at either FCS or Division 2 level. Committed to play at Union.
  59. Hayden Rockett – St. John’s Prep HS – WR / DB – Rockett stands 5’11” and 195 pounds and plays on both sides of the ball. An elusive wide receiver who runs crisp routes and has excellent hands. Also very productive on the defensive side with good instincts leading to interceptions. His older brother Owen is a wide receiver on the Colgate football team. Committed to play at Trinity.
  60. David Salazar -Newton North HS – Uncommitted- OLB / DE – Salazar is a good competitor although a bit undersized for the DE position at 6’1″ and 210 pounds. Salazar would excel as an OLB allowing him to have an opportunity to show his solid positioning, great motor and aggressive tackling. Also a wrestler, Salazar would be a great addition for a local college.
  61. Patrick Watson – Boston College High School – Uncommitted – OL Watson is a beast in the MIAA. His size and athleticism are huge plusses to have as a tackle in high school. While no offers have been extended his way, he has interest from BC, UMASS and FCS schools. Watson is definitely someone who will play college football at a high level at either guard or tackle. Committed to Williams.
  62. TJ Rothmann– Boston College HS – MLB/FB – At 6’3” and 215 pounds, Rothmann is a big and athletic middle linebacker that diagnoses plays well and uses his speed to impact the opponent’s run game. On offense Rothmann is used as a FB often getting goal line carries and is a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield. Rothmann should get some interest after the season or prep for another year of development. Committed to Williams.
  63. Spencer Kendall – Lexington HS – Uncommitted- A 6’5” WR has benefitted from the Lexington run and gun offense under Sal Frelick. Kendall is a WR with a big frame but needs to add muscle, bulk up and add explosiveness. A prep year would do wonders for Kendall who could see his stock soar towards the like of Belmont Hill’s junior WR Jake Bobo. Committed to play basketball at Hamilton.
  64. Derek Laundry – Billerica HS -Uncommitted – Laundry is a powerful FB/LB workhorse for Billerica on both offense and defense. He is a very good athlete and will play football in college. Committed to Bryant.
  65. Jack Barrett – Holliston HS – ATH – Barrett has been a constant presence in the Holliston offense for a while and has led his team to many wins along the way. Barrett has mostly played QB at Holliston but will have to translate to another position at the next level. At 6’3” and 200 pounds, an athletic Barrett could translate to either receiver or linebacker. Update: Committed to Trinity to play football.
  66. Bobby Mylod – North Attleboro HS – RB / LB – Mylod recently committed to play football at Bentley and is a rock on defense standing 6’2″ and 215 pounds. He also is a force on offense running the ball and also catching the ball out of the backfield. Mylod was recently named MVP of the Hockomock – Davenport Division.
  67. Freddy Okito – Milton Academy – WR / CB / ATH – Okito is a bit small at 5’9″ and 170 pounds but he is a fast wide receiver that makes his presence felt. Okito is a player that is very good in space and has a solid set of hands to make catches and with 4.5 speed could find a place at a local college. Update: UNH very interested and may make an offer.
  68. Tank Walker – Springfield Central HS- Uncommitted – A high flying QB at the high school level, Walker’s future most likely lies on the defensive side of the ball. Look for Walker to pick up FCS offers after the season.
  69. David Onyemem – Central Catholic – ATH / DB – Onyemem is a defensive athlete who has committed to play football at Bryant University. At 6’1’’ and 200 pounds, Onyemem has good size in the defensive secondary and plays bigger on offense as he often lined up at tight end for the Raiders.Onyemem has good instincts and a good first step to close on ball carriers while also being able to cover downfield. Also used on special teams as a long-snapper.
  70. Max Beati – Andover HS -Uncommitted – Beati has size at 6′ 8″ and over 300 pounds so colleges love his build. Beati recently visited Yale and look for him to find a home to play college football by the new year.
