Let’s see what is new as we are now 71 days out from the beginning of the December 20th early signing period for the class of 2018. It will also be interesting to see how many recruits enroll early at school as quarterback EJ Perry did at Boston College last January.
It should not come as a big surprise to see the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) actively recruiting football players in Massachusetts. They recently offered Everett’s Mike Sainristil and Isaiah Likely but they were also second to offer Lewis Cine of Everett way back in May. Recruiting guru Paul Gonnella is on the USM staff and grew up playing football and basketball at Wakefield High School here in Massachusetts (where he is in the Athletic Hall of Fame).
A couple of key games this weekend with two undefeated teams in Nantucket and Mashpee meeting on Friday night in Mashpee. Last season Mashpee won a Super Bowl title but lost to Nantucket 31-26 in a road game where they turned the ball over three times.
In the ISL the key game will be Belmont Hill at Milton Academy. Both of these teams have 2-1 records with five games left in their regular season. A second loss in the ISL can kill a team’s bowl hopes as head to head records are what cost a two loss Lawrence Academy team a bowl bid last season.
The three FBS college football programs in New England are now a combined 3-14 with BC 2-4, UMass 0-6 and UConn 1-4.
BC Head Coach Steve Addazio has moved up to #7 on the coaches hot seat rankings and UMass Head Coach Mark Whipple is currently ranked at #11. Addazio’s press conference following the Virginia Tech loss was highlighted by him saying about his offense “it will come together and it will be beautiful…”. The Eagles had better hope so as they are on the road at high scoring Louisville this weekend against Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson.
Everett is 4-0 and has put up 38, 33, 42 and 55 points against some very good football teams including Xaverian Brothers and St. John’s Prep. Their defense in these games has given up 7, 7, 28 and 27 but much of that scoring came later in games with the Everett starters no longer playing.
Speaking of Everett, it is interesting to see on their MaxPreps schedule page they are already listed as playing BC High on Saturday December 2nd. This is a likely Super Bowl scenario but not sure we should make it official yet.
Make sure to catch Wes Welker’s “A Football Life” on the NFL Network. His high school football coach faxed information on the 5’9″ and 185 pound Welker to 105 Division 1 schools with only one school, Texas Tech and Head Coach Mike Leach, showing any interest. Couldn’t help but think of a certain three-sport star athlete at Lexington while watching the Welker episode.
People tend to think Cambridge’s Matt Damon got his start in the movie “Good Will Hunting” but forget he starred five years earlier in the football movie “School Ties” as running back and lead blocker Charlie Dillon.
